PICTURES OF THE OLD POST OFFICE

Although called The Old Post Office, our ancient stone cottage was originally a cider press, which was built sometime in the 1600’s. The cottage was extended in the 19th century and was used as the local village sub Post Office between 1929 and 1967. The Post Mistress operated from a wooden shed at the side of the cottage (which is now the utility room) and her husband delivered the post by bicycle. This may sound like quite a lovely, traditional notion but the husband only had 1 leg, having lost his other leg in The Great War. Every day he cycled all over Doward – If you climb the hill behind our cottage, you will understand why this was a huge undertaking.
